MG4 EV Urban: “A compact car that’s as accommodating as it is keenly priced,” said Steve Huntingford, Editor, What Car?
MG HS PHEV: “The MG HS Plug-in Hybrid is a tempting choice for private buyers and company car drivers alike. It’s an incredibly well-rounded family SUV,” said Steve Huntingford, Editor, What Car?
MGS9 PHEV: “This huge SUV undercuts rivals by many thousands of pounds. Yet, it is a genuine seven-seater with a commanding driving position, a smart interior and hushed cruising manners,” said Steve Huntingford, Editor, What Car?
MG has achieved the impressive accolade of winning three categories in the What Car? Electric Car Awards 2026. The successful trio named best in their class were the MG4 EV Urban as Best Electric Small Car, the MG HS PHEV as Best Hybrid Family SUV, and the MGS9 PHEV as the Best Hybrid 7-seat SUV.
The team of experts from What Car? judged the latest hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric cars across 15 categories and rated them using results of real-world testing.
David Allison, Director of Product and Planning, MG Motor UK commented: “Electrification is at the heart of MG's model range with over 91% of our new car sales now having an electrified powertrain - either Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) or fully electric (BEV).”
“This trio of awards proves that MG’s advanced technology and strategy of designing and developing cars in Europe for Europe is creating class-leading cars for our customers to enjoy,” David added.
MG4 EV Urban - Best Electric Small Car
Flying to the top of the Electric Small Car category, the MG4 EV Urban has become an instant winner since its launch in March this year thanks to a combination of efficiency, performance, affordability and generous space available for up to five people and their luggage.
What Car? Editor, Steve Huntingford said: ““While small hatchbacks make good urban runabouts, if passenger and luggage space matter to you, you’ve traditionally had to look elsewhere and increase your budget significantly. But not with the MG4 EV Urban – a compact car that’s as accommodating as it is keenly priced. As a bonus, the Urban steers accurately through bends and offers a more comfortable ride than key rivals.”
With Comfort and Premium trim levels, standard and long-range batteries offering between 201 to 258 miles of range (WLTP combined), prices for the MG4 EV Urban range from £23,495 to £27,995.
MG HS PHEV - Best Hybrid Family SUV
Beating all its competitors to keep the title of Best Hybrid Family SUV for the second consecutive year, the MG HS PHEV is one of the best-selling plug-in hybrids in the UK, consistently appearing in the top 10 sales charts.
Known for its smooth and efficient hybrid powertrain with an electric-only range of up to 75 miles, a spacious and prestigious interior, plus a luxury standard specification, the MG HS remains top of its class.
Singing its praises for the second year running, What Car? Editor, Steve Huntingford said: “With its keen pricing and long electric range, the MG HS plug-in hybrid is a tempting choice for private buyers and company car drivers alike. What’s more, it handles both corners and bumps well, and has a spacious, smartly finished interior. So, while it might draw you in with its impressive headline numbers, it’s an incredibly well-rounded family SUV.”
With SE and Trophy trim levels, the MG HS PHEV is available from £32,495 to £34,995.
MGS9 PHEV - Best Hybrid 7-Seat SUV
Winning the Best Hybrid 7-Seat SUV award for the MGS9 PHEV and going straight to the top of its class immediately after its UK launch is even more impressive considering it is MG’s first 7-seat car in the large SUV category.
“The phrase ‘bargain of the century’ might be overused, but it doesn’t feel like an exaggeration when applied to the MGS9. This huge SUV undercuts rivals by many thousands of pounds. Yet it’s a genuine seven-seater with a commanding driving position, a smart interior and hushed cruising manners,” said Steve Huntingford, Editor, What Car?.
Its electric-only range of up to 62 miles means the MGS9 PHEV is perfect for everyday driving with lower emissions and running costs, with the back-up of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine for longer trips.
The three rows of seats provide ample space for everyone, and when the third row of seats are folded away, there is a generous 1026-litres of boot space available.
Comfort and Premium trim levels are available from £34,210 and £37,995 respectively.
