Ferrari joined international experts at Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna to discuss the future of battery technology.
Maranello, September 21, 2026 – International experts from academia and industry gathered at the University of Bologna for a day dedicated to the chemistry and technologies shaping the battery sector, and to the collaboration between the Alma Mater, Ferrari and NXP.
Titled “E-Cells Symposium 2026: From Research to Industry”, the symposium was moderated by Professor Catia Arbizzani of the Alma Mater and Wenzel Prochazka of NXP. Ferrari’s Chief Executive Officer Benedetto Vigna and Chief Research and Development Officer Ernesto Lasalandra were both present at the event, which brought together internationally renowned researchers, industry leaders, and students to explore the full battery value chain – from materials science to cell production, electronics and systems management.
The day also marked a milestone for E-Cells Lab, the laboratory established by the University of Bologna, Ferrari and NXP in 2024 to advance research into lithium-ion cells through shared projects and equipment.
The programme opened with a session on chemical research featuring Martin Winter (University of Münster, founder of the MEET Battery Research Centre), Ying Shirley Meng (University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering) and Karim Zaghib (Concordia University), a leading voice in battery electrochemistry.
Industry perspectives followed, with Jiwoo Ahn, head of Samsung SDI R&D Europe and Min Su, Vice President of Technology at Wanxiang 123 Systems, discussing the outlook for cell production and solid-state technologies. A closing session on electronics brought together Philipp Welz of Munich Electrification, Ugo Sorge of FAAM, Francesco Monti, CEO of Podium Advanced Technologies, and Eric Huang of Sunwoda.
Addressing students at the event, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna reminded how Ferrari always understood that innovation cannot happen in isolation. Research and development are at the heart of everything Ferrari does, and events like this remind that technological progress depends on working closely with the brightest minds in academia and industry alike.
