Some cars define an era, while others transcend it, retaining their appeal. The Alfa Romeo Giulia belongs to the latter category, as explored in the new book Alfa Romeo Giulia – Timeless Classic, launched on the opening day of Auto e Moto d’Epoca Bologna. One of Europe's largest classic motoring events, focusing on passion for engines, the exhibition runs until 25 October.
The launch took place on the Alfa Romeo stand, during a talk that brought together Eugenio Franzetti, Global Director Marketing of Alfa Romeo, Alessandro Maccolini, Alfa Romeo Design Project Manager and Lorenzo Ardizio, Curator of the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese author of the new tome.
Drawing on historical research and first-hand accounts, the speakers took the visitors on a journey through two generations of the Giulia, retracing the extraordinary sporting legacy of the ’60s saloon and revealing the background to the creation of its contemporary successor. Two different eras brought together by the same, unmistakable Alfa Romeo spirit, reflected in the brand's stand.
Together with the Alfa Romeo Classiche division, the brand celebrates the theme of the sports saloon with four iconic models, showcasing over 60 years of technical evolution, passion and success in motorsport.
Alfa Romeo Giulia – Timeless Classic opens with a foreword by Santo Ficili, Alfa Romeo CEO, who emphasises the profound emotional bond between the Giulia and enthusiasts: “For those who, like me, have had the privilege of experiencing Alfa Romeo up close, the Giulia represents something deeply personal. It's one of those cars that manage to create an authentic emotional bond with their drivers, one with the ability to speak to the heart even before resorting to reasoning. The Giulia might be the contemporary epitome of the Alfa Romeo spirit: a car that continues to excite me every time I see it. A timeless automobile, one worthy of preservation, custodianship and being handed down for generations to come from the very first moment.”
Alfa Romeo Giulia – Timeless Classic: the story of a contemporary legend
The book traces the fascinating history of a car that has brought the essence of Alfa Romeo back to the forefront of the international automotive landscape. Building on its legacy, the modern Giulia reinterprets the brand's sporting DNA through an uncompromising, contemporary vision of sportiness.
The journey began long before the 2015 debut of the modern Giulia, drawing on the rich history of Alfa Romeo. From the legendary post-war saloons and the original 1960s Giulia to the legacy of the Quadrifoglio, the book charts a heritage of ingenuity, courage and passion spanning generations, with each new challenge providing an opportunity for reinvention.
The modern Giulia emerged from an equally ambitious undertaking: a project initially shrouded in secrecy, driven by the determination of Sergio Marchionne to return the brand to a leading position in the automotive world. Through bold thinking, unconventional choices and a group of designers starting from a blank sheet of paper, a car destined to leave its mark was born.
Featuring first-hand accounts, technical insights and an extensive collection of photographs, the book takes the reader behind the scenes of the creation of Giulia. Its design, engineering, performance and the unparalleled driving pleasure combine to tell a story in which technology meets emotion.
Particular attention is given to the Giulia Quadrifoglio, the purest expression of this philosophy and its most exclusive interpretations. These include special editions and limited production models such as the spectacular Giulia Quadrifoglio Luna Rossa. Masterpieces on four wheels, together they make up a universe consisting of research, character and the desire to stand out.
Published by Giorgio Nada Editore and distributed by Giunti Editore, the 208-page tome includes bilingual text in Italian and English. It is available during the Show from the Alfa Romeo and Giorgio Nada Editore/Libreria dell'Automobile stands. Enthusiasts can also purchase the book from the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese, the Libreria dell'Automobile in Milan and in Giunti al Punto bookstores across Italy, as well as online at www.giorgionadaeditore.it and www.libreriadellautomobile.it, and through Amazon and other major online retailers.
Four sports saloons embodying over 60 years of Alfa Romeo history
The passion captured in the book is brought to life on the Alfa Romeo stand: together with the Alfa Romeo Classiche division, the theme of the sports saloon is celebrated through four cars that illustrate the technical and stylistic evolution of the brand.
Three of the heritage cars come from the collection at the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese. Visitors can also discover the services offered by Alfa Romeo Classiche to preserve and celebrate the history of the iconic Italian brand, including Certificates of Origin, Certificates of Authenticity and the Restoration service.
Leading the display is the 1963 Giulia TI Super, the ‘ready-to-race’ version of the legendary Portello sports saloon, unveiled at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza on 24 April 1963 - just 501 examples were produced. Featuring a lightweight body, the Quadrifoglio emblem and a 1.6-litre, 112hp twin-cam engine, it represented the ideal starting point for the work of the tuners for the racetrack. A car that showcased the exceptional dynamic capabilities of Giulia, securing important class victories, including success in the prestigious 1963 'Tour de France – Auto'.
Also on display is the 75 Turbo Evoluzione (1987). Limited to 500 examples to meet homologation requirements for Group A touring car competition, it enabled Alfa Romeo to compete with both factory and private teams in the 1987 World Touring Car Championship. Fitted with the legendary 1,762cc turbocharged twin-cam engine equipped with an intercooler, and transaxle architecture incorporating a De Dion tube suspension. Distinctive aerodynamic additions enhanced track performance while meeting homologation requirements.
The third historic model on display is the 155 V6 TI ‘ITC’ (1996), built for the International Touring Championship and an evolution of the car that won the 1993 DTM with Nicola Larini. Among its key developments was a sophisticated 90-degree V6 engine, designed to lower the car’s centre of gravity. Producing 490hp at almost 12,000 rpm the engine was introduced mid-season and helped return Alfa Romeo to the forefront of the championship.
Completing the display is the Giulia Quadrifoglio Super Sport (2024), a contemporary expression of the same sporting heritage. Produced in only 275 units, this special edition celebrates the first victory for Alfa Romeo at the Mille Miglia in 1928, achieved by legendary 6C 1500 Super Sport. It stands out for the striking reinterpretation of the Quadrifoglio emblem against a black background, marking a first in the symbol's more than 100-year history. Power comes from a 520hp 2.9 V6 engine paired with a mechanical limited-slip differential. Carbon fibre details and an interior featuring red 3D carbon fibre finishes underline the model's exclusivity, alongside the individual numbering identifying each car of the limited series.
