Around a third (34%) of adults plan to travel by car over the August Bank Holiday weekend, with an estimated 2.3 billion miles set to be covered across the UK, according to new research from Alfa Romeo*.
Those planning to travel are also expecting to cover more miles than usual, with 51% saying they anticipate driving further than they typically would on a weekend getaway. The car remains the preferred mode of transport for a UK weekend getaway for 78% of those surveyed, with 47% citing freedom and flexibility as the biggest appeal. A further 34% say seeing more of the country is the biggest attraction of a road trip this bank holiday weekend.
For many, the journey is as much of an important part of the trip as the destination itself. More than half (52%) would be willing to drive further than usual for a more scenic route, while 40% would add up to 30 minutes to their journey if it meant enjoying beautiful scenery on the way. Almost four in 10 (38%) also say beautiful scenery on the journey is an essential part of a weekend getaway.
The roads people drive on also influence where people choose to escape, with 41% saying their choice of weekend getaway is influenced by the route they have to take, while 22% say enjoying the drive itself is one of the most important factors that make or break a weekend getaway.
The new Alfa Romeo Tonale is designed for drivers who want to enjoy the journey as much as the destination, combining distinctive Italian design with engaging driving dynamics and performance. Its perfectly balanced chassis, direct steering and sporty suspension are designed to deliver the driving pleasure expected from Alfa Romeo.
Jules Tilstone, Managing Director, Alfa Romeo UK, said: “For many British drivers the journey to reach a weekend getaway destination is an important part of the trip itself, with scenic routes and driving enjoyment influencing how they choose to travel. The new Tonale is designed around this idea, combining the driving pleasure Alfa Romeo is known for with the practicality needed for longer journeys. The Tonale is a great fit for those looking to make the most of their time on the road this bank holiday.”
With 51% expecting to drive further than usual, practicality is also important for a longer getaway. The Alfa Romeo Tonale has up to 500-litre of boot space that expands to 1,550 litres with the rear seats folded, while its hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains give drivers a choice of performance. As 54% of respondents say time to relax is an essential part of a weekend getaway, many use the journey as an opportunity to switch off and enjoy the road. The new Alfa Romeo Tonale is designed to make the most of that time behind the wheel, with engaging driving dynamics, responsive handling and a choice of hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
